            About Toyota

            Summary

            The Toyota brand is one of the biggest automakers in the world. In India it has a JV as Toyota Kirloskar Motor Pvt Ltd. The Indian partner Kirloskar has a minor stake in this JV. The Japanese maker entered India in October 1997 and it launched its first product the Qualis, which was a runaway success for the company.

            Founder and First Car

            Toyota Motor Company was founded in 1937 by Kiichiro Toyoda. This was a desire to enter the automobile industry and to diversify the business of Toyota Industries. The first vehicle was made in 1934 and this was the Type A, which was an engine. In 1936 the first vehicle Type AA came into existence. Today Toyota owns brands like Toyota, Scion, Lexus, Ranz and even Hino commercial vehicles. US and Japan form the largest markets for the Japanese automaker.

            Indian Operations

            Toyota at the moment has two assembly plants in India. Both are at Bidadi, Karnataka and have an annual production capacity of 80,000 units and 70,000 units respectively. With both these plants the company has a total output of 150,000 units.

            Products and Services

            Toyota has over 250 dealerships in India and. offers a range of products starting from the Glanza, and Urban Cruiser to the Innova Fortuner and the Camry. The first two products have come off the back of a joint venture with Suzuki which began in 2018.

            Competition

            Toyota competes with Honda, Ford, Maruti Suzuki and even Hyundai. The company is operating in the mass and the premium segment at the moment and this has added more variety to its buyers.
